Privacy
What we collect, why we collect it, and what you can ask us to do with it. Written to the Privacy Act 2020.
1Who this is about
Nextel New Zealand Limited collects personal information when you order from this website, when you contact us, and when you are a customer. This page says what we do with it. If anything here is unclear, ring us on 09 2002 666 or email contact@mynextel.nz and a person will answer.
2What we collect
When you place an order or send an enquiry. Your name, phone number and email address. The plans you chose. For each mobile number you are bringing across: the number, who it is with now, whether it is prepay or on account, and either your account number with them or the SIM ID. For each broadband connection: the address and who supplies it now. The date and time you would prefer, anything you write in the notes, and the invoice you upload.
When you use the address checker. What you type is sent to Toitū Te Whenua Land Information New Zealand to find matching addresses. We keep the result on our server for a day so the next person searching the same street gets an answer faster. We do not store who searched.
In your own browser. Your order basket and the address you checked are kept by your browser on your own device. They are not sent to us until you press send, and clearing your browsing data removes them.
Proof of who you are. Some things need checking before they can be set up. We may ask to see identification to confirm you are who you say you are, and a student ID where a plan is on the student rate. We look at it, we store it securely, and we keep it only for as long as we need it.
When you become a customer. Your service and billing records, the numbers and connections on your account, payment details, and records of faults and support.
Our web host keeps standard server logs, as every web server does. They include IP addresses and are kept for a short period under the host's own settings. We do not read them except to look into a fault or misuse.
3Why we collect it
To answer your enquiry, to work out what your address can get, to lodge the transfer with your current provider and the network operator, to connect and support the service, to bill you, and to meet obligations the law puts on a telecommunications provider.
We do not sell your information. We do not use it for advertising and we do not pass it to anyone for theirs.
4Who we share it with
Only the people needed to do the job you asked for:
- The wholesale and network providers who carry the service and complete the transfer. Section 12 says who they are.
- Your current provider, because a transfer cannot happen without them being told the number and the account it sits on.
- Resend, the service that delivers your order to our inbox.
- Our web host.
- Anyone we are required to tell by law, including under a court order or a lawful request from an agency entitled to ask.
5Where it goes
The website is hosted by Hostinger, whose servers may be outside New Zealand. Order and enquiry emails are delivered through Resend, which may also process them outside New Zealand. Address searches go to Land Information New Zealand, here.
Where information is sent overseas we take reasonable steps to satisfy ourselves that it is protected by comparable safeguards, as principle 12 of the Privacy Act requires.
6Cookies, and what is stored on your device
This website sets no advertising cookies, and runs no tracking or analytics. Nobody is following you around the internet on our account.
Two things are stored by your browser on your own device: the plans in your order basket, and the last address you checked, so you do not have to type it twice. Both stay on your device, both are readable only by this website, and clearing your browsing data removes them.
7How long we keep it
Enquiries and orders that do not turn into an account are deleted after six months.
While you are a customer we keep your account records for as long as you are with us. After an account closes we keep the billing records for seven years, because tax law requires business records to be kept that long, and then they go. We are not keeping them to use; we are keeping them because we have to.
Identification and student IDs are kept only while they are needed to verify the account.
8Keeping it safe
Access to customer information is limited to the people who need it to do their work. The website is served over an encrypted connection and the order form is sent to us over one. No system is perfect, and we will tell you, and the Office of the Privacy Commissioner, if a breach happens that is likely to cause you serious harm, as the Privacy Act requires.
9Seeing it, and correcting it
You can ask us for the personal information we hold about you, and you can ask us to correct it if it is wrong. Email contact@mynextel.nz or ring 09 2002 666. We will reply as soon as we can and no later than 20 working days after we receive the request. We may need to confirm who you are first.
10If you are unhappy
Tell us first, on 09 2002 666 or contact@mynextel.nz, and we will try to sort it out. If it is about privacy and we cannot, you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner: 0800 803 909, or privacy.org.nz. It costs nothing to complain to them.
11Changes to this page
If we change how we handle personal information we will update this page and change the date at the top. The version on this page is the one that applies.
12Who carries the service
Nextel is a New Zealand retail provider. The connections themselves run over wholesale services from Devoli Limited and over the mobile or fibre network that reaches your address. To connect you, and to move a number across, those providers have to be given the details of the service being set up.
